*Kelsey Bell of Francis Howell North High School was named the 2012 National High School Journalist of the Year this past weekend in Seattle. It’s the first National Journalist of the Year ever named from the Francis Howell School District and the second ever from Missouri (the other was from Mexico, MO in 2004). Kelsey and six runners-up from throughout the country were recognized at the closing ceremonies at the Spring JEA/NSPA National High School Journalism Convention in Seattle. Kelsey will receive a $5,000 scholarship for college and will speak at next spring’s national convention in San Francisco, Calif. This honor is a HUGE deal for Kelsey and the students in the program. That wasn’t the only good news from the weekend. FHNtoday.com brought home the school’s third Pacemaker Award in four years for Online News sites. The Pacemaker is generally regarded as the top award a high school publication can earn. In the Best of Show competitions, all four mediums placed in the top 4 in their respective categories. The Excalibur yearbook placed 3th in their category, FHNtodayTV placed third in Broadcast, FHNtoday.com placed 4th in their category and the North Star brought home the Best of Show trophy for the top spot in the Newsmagazine category. Senior Kaitlyn Williams was honored as one of four finalists in the “J” scholarship competition. Finally, a few students were honored in the on-site write-off competitions. Emily Forst earned an Honorable Mention in Computer Design: Headline, Brianna Schroer earned an Excellent in YB Layout: Inside Pages, and Kaitlyn Williams earned an Excellent in Yearbook Sports Photography. Taking top honors in the writeoff competitions in their respective categories were Kelsey Bell who earned a Superior in Computer Design: Infographis and Nick Bussell who earned a Superior in Newsmagazine: Layout. 4/18 Manfull

*Congratulations to the choirs as they had a fantastic day yesterday at MSHSAA State Choir Contest. Concert Choir and Chamber Choir both received “Superior” (1) ratings and our Freshman/Sophomore Treble Choir received an “Excellent” (2) rating. I cannot begin to tell you how hard these students have worked; they were given challenging literature to learn and really stepped up their level of performance this year. I would also like to add that their behavior was as impressive to me as their performances. 4/18 L. Smith
