Until sophomore, Jessica Olsen, gets her first laugh from the audience she is full of nerve no matter how many times she has performed on stage before, especially this show, since this is her first time directing.

Directing the play, Brighton Beach Memoirs, means Jessica is constantly giving words of encouragement through practices, rehearsals and shows. But behind the scenes the drama department has their own way of encouragement before shows known specifically by the “theater kids” as a “Spirit Circle”.

“Our spirit circle is so important to the entire cast and crew,” said Olsen. “It brings energy and a great amount of adrenaline to all of us.”

The cast and crew stands in their Spirit Circle, holding hands with their fingers interlocked, while the Jessica and producer, Matt Miller, junior, each give their own words of encouragement. Then they begin to “pass the energy” turning into a giant group hug.

After everyone has rubbed senior, Zack Wood’s head, gave their senior speeches, finished performing another ritual, “Fairy Dust” the cast is done with their Spirit Circle, they turn without speaking, kiss the stage and hope for high spirits throughout the show.

“We do all of these things for good luck, it’s show biz.” said Olsen.
