Miller and Schulze make All -State Choir

All state choir is held between January 3, and January 6, at Tan-tar-a in the Lake of the Ozarks. Many choir members have gone through the long process of auditioning for all state choir. This year, we have two students that were chosen to be in the choir, seniors Matt Miller and Laura Schulze. This is a very big honor because according to most it is very difficult to be selected.

“Some schools have kids make it to state every year, we have the talent, but  part of the reason it is not common here is because we just don’t have the resources that other schools do,” vocal music teacher, Lorraine Smith, said.

Another reason it is not common to make state choir is that the process is difficult and few people from the 25 schools that participate get selected. Auditioners have to first audition for the Saint Louis Metro 8 district choir, and then have to score in the top 20 of their section. (Soprano, Alto, Bass, or Tenor.) Those 80 people then audition for state, and then only four from each section are chosen.

“It’s been a goal of mine since freshman year. It will be a great experience, since I want to be involved in music in my future,” Schulze said.

Many are excited over the fact that two students from FHN made it, since even one student making it is rare. Last year, there was nobody who was selected to participate, and the year before, there was only one.

“Mrs. Smith and my parents have been really supportive. I’m excited because I wanted to do this, I practiced every night and worked hard, and I love to sing. I also like being a champion,”  Miller said.
