Learning Commons to sponsor new club

libraryEpsilon Beta, a state service organization for libraries, is a new club being offered at North during the 2013-2014 school year. Members of the club will help with various library tasks such as planning events like coffeehouse or running hot chocolate and coffee Fridays. Service letters will be offered for students based off of the number of hours they volunteer either outside of school or during teacher assistant hours.

“One reason to join is that we are going to have a lot of fun,” FHN Media Specialist Angie Davis said. “The second reason is that it looks really good on college applications.”

After attending a workshop at the Missouri Association of School Librarians (MASL) 2013 Spring Conference, Davis and Tara Willen decided they wanted to bring Epsilon Beta to North. Willen and Davis were also inspired by the Epsilon Beta club at Troy High School (http://www.troy.k12.mo.us/Page/414).

“Other than coffeehouse and book discussions, we don’t have anything set in stone,” Willen said. “The people who join this year are going to be the one’s setting the tone.”

Episcpoi Tes Bibliothekes, or “Keepers of the Library”, started in 1931 at Washington High School in Washington Missouri. During the 1968-1969 school year, Epsilon Beta became a statewide organization. (http://www.maslonline.org/?page=EpsilonBeta).

“I like being able to get more involved with the library,” sophomore Zoe Lawson said. “It would be a lot of fun to work with books.”

Students can join Eplison Beta by attending one of the informational meetings which will be held before or after school on Tuesday, August 20th in the Learning Commons Lounge.

Great story Brittany! We’ve decided that our first meeting will be Tuesday, August 20th. Students can come to the before school meeting at 7:00, or the after school meeting at 2:30. Both meetings will take place in the Learning Commons Lounge.
