FutureBuilders is the non-profit education foundation of the Missouri School Boards’ Association, organized in 1996 to promote student achievement and parent/community involvement in public schools. Built on the belief that public education is the foundation of our democracy, FutureBuilders believes that it is imperative that we counter the negative stereotyping of public schools so often expounded by the media and so-called “experts.” The foundation works to spread the news about the good things going on day in and day out in Missouri’s public schools. Their unofficial motto is “Research, not rhetoric” and they use that as a model to help tell the true story of the successes of our public schools.

The District strives to hold school according to the school calendar adopted by the Board of Education; however, to ensure the safety of the students and staff, there may be times when school will be canceled due to inclement weather.  The Francis Howell School District (FHSD) encompasses over 150 square miles, and in that range of space, there will be times when the conditions in some parts of the District may be deemed unsafe while conditions in another part of the District may be deemed safe.  The decision to cancel school is made for the entire District—not for a certain area. Click here to view the entire FHSD Procedures for Inclement Weather and the 2013-2014 Snow Schedules. 11/24 Hayes

Snow Days

With the weather turning cooler, we are reminded that winter will be here before long, including the frozen white stuff (snow) that is both looked forward to and dreaded.  This is a reminder that we have snow days built into our school calendar, and we request that vacations not be scheduled on these days when we may have school to make up for missed days due to snow or other inclement weather.  Make up dates are listed below:

  • Snow Make-Up Day 1    May 23
  • Snow Make-Up Day 2    March 10
  • Snow Make-Up Day 3    March 11
  • Snow Make-Up Day 4    March 12
  • Snow Make-Up Day 5    May 27
  • Snow Make-Up Day 6    May 28
  • Snow Make-Up Day 7    May 29
  • Snow Make-Up Day 8    May 30
  • Snow Make-Up Day 9    June 2
  • Snow Make-Up Day 10  June 3

Senior ads for the yearbooks are due Nov. 20 for anyone wanting to make sure they get space in the book. There is limited space for these ads. Any ad coming in by Nov. 20 will be included in the book. Any ad coming in after the deadline will be included if space is available. Once space runs out that will be it, there will be no additional space allocated so please get your ad in today so you don’t miss out. Forms were mailed home. They are also available in the main office, room 026 and online at http://fhntoday.com/advertising/. 11/20 Manfull

*Twenty-two FHN journalism staff members returned with numerous awards from their trip to Boston this past weekend where they attended the JEA/NSPA Fall National Journalism Convention.

The North Star newspaper was inducted into the National Scholastic Press Association’s Hall of Fame for earning 10 All-American ratings in the past 11 years through the organization. It was North’s first student-produced publication to each such an award.

The North Star also earned the staff’s first ever Newspaper Pacemaker Award given out by NSPA. The Pacemaker Award is the top scholastic journalism award a staff can receive. In the school’s 27-year history the North Star has been a finalist 5 other times for this award, but this year was the staff’s first win. The Excalibur Yearbook brought home FHN’s first Yearbook Pacemaker Award last spring. The student-produced website FHNtoday.com has the most Pacemakers of any medium at the school having earned 4 in the last 5 years.

In the convention’s Best of Show competition, all four student media placed. In the Large School category for websites, FHNtoday.com place fourth, in yearbooks between 275-324 pages the Excalibur placed third and in the Newsmagazine category the North Star placed third. The top spot for an FHN staff in the Best of Show competition went to FHNtodayTV which placed 2nd in the Broadcast category.

Senior Fionna Cruz and 2013 Graduate Liz Leonard were honored with an Honorable Mention in NSPA’s Infographic of the Year Competition. Junior Daniel Bodden earned an Honorable Mention in Multimedia Sports Story of the Year, Senior Sophie Gordon brought home an Honorable Mention in Multimedia Feature Story of the Year, and Matt Krieg brought home the highest placing with a 4th Place finish in Sports Action Photo of the Year.

In on-the-spot write-off competitions, 15 students were also recognized. Honorable Mentions went to: Claire Boenitz in Newswriting, Daniel Bodden in Editorial Writing, Lauren Pike in Feature Writing, Emily Hampson in Newsmagazine Layout, Fionna Cruz in Yearbook Layout Inside Pages and Maddie Hiatt in Graphic Design Infographics. Earning Excellents were: Liz Mayer in Yearbook Copy/Caption Clubs, Elisabeth Condon in Literary Magazine Poetry, Alexis Tainter in Online News Package, Zack Eaton in Online News Package, Jake Chiarelli in Online News Package and Ashleigh Jenkins in Newspaper Sports Photography. Taking the top ranking of Superior in their competitions were Holly Tate in Yearbook Copy/Caption Student Life, Matt Krieg in Yearbook Sports Photography and Cameron McCarty in Photography Portfolio.

The journalism program at Francis Howell North works with students on a variety of skills from writing and photography to teamwork and leadership skills. There are currently 85 staff members a part of the program and more than 300 students work through staff and introductory classes each year. 11/18 Manfull
