Varsity Girls Soccer Opens Season Against St. Dominic

IMG_2210Last night, March 24, the Varsity Lady Knights soccer team faced off against the reigning state champs, the St. Dominic Crusaders in their first soccer game of the season. The Crusaders quickly took control of the game and finished off the game with a 0-4 win.

“Overall, as I told the team, its the first of many games,” Head Coach Mark Olwig said. “I told them its just a bump in the road and the road is a very long season.”

The Crusaders had control of the ball to start the game and kept control of it most of the first half. 16 minutes into the game the Knights got a handball called on them right outside the box giving the Crusaders a free kick. The kicker bent the ball up and over into the goal to put the Crusaders up 0-1. At the end of the first half the Crusaders had a 0-2 lead. The crusaders then scored two more goals in the second half to finish the game off 0-4.

“We have to make sure we use these types of games to build a better and when May comes around we all know what we need to do,” Olwig said.

In the after game speech Olwig told the team that they need to try and compare this year to the March Madness tournament. He explained that everyone gets into the tournament, and that its not about how they start the season but how they finish the season.

“It is one of the different things about high school soccer, once the season does start practices are more about correcting some things and work on some things,” Olwig said. “Most importantly we need to get healthy again, we have two more games this week and health is probably the big thing to maintain a healthy team to get them all playing at the right level.”

The Knights next game is this Wednesday at 5 p.m. against Fort Zumwalt West at North.
