Voting for the Major League Baseball All-Star Game is coming to a close, but the races for the starting positions are just beginning. Voting for the All-Star Game ends at midnight on Thursday, July 3. To this point, Jose Bautista leads the majors in votes with 3,665,208 votes, while David Wright brings up the rear of the starters with 1,051,640. Carlos Gomez is trying to come back into the starting lineup, as he trails Giancarlo Stanton by just 31,029 votes, a small total in today’s inflated All-Star voting system. On the American League side, Yoenis Cespedes has fallen behind Melky Cabrera by 162,394 votes. Cespedes in in search of his first All-Star Game appearance, while Gomez has been voted into the game one time prior.
This year’s All-Star Game voting can tell us a lot. Either NL fans don’t vote as often, or AL fans are more loyal. In either event, the AL players have many more votes than NL players. This, however, has absolutely nothing to do with the outcome of the game. The NL had won three straight games until the AL won last year. This year, the NL will win the All-Star Game regardless of their fan support. They’ll win because they have a much more complete team, with their pitching being the strong point. The NL has great pitchers such as Adam Wainwright and Clayton Kershaw that the AL simply cannot match.
