NHS is holding weekly lunchroom clean-ups to help the FHN faculty and NHS members looking for service hours.

The weekly lunchroom clean-ups involve NHS members scrubbing down the tables and microwaves with Clorox wipes and cleaning off the surfaces and messes. This action benefits both teachers and custodial staff

alike. The custodians have other important jobs that need to be done.

“It leaves one less thing for them to do,” Chemistry Teacher and NHS Leader Donna Malkmus said. “Teachers appreciate the fact that they can walk into the lunchroom and smell and say ‘Oh it’s clean today.’”

The previous clean-ups have gone well according to Malkmus, However cleaning of the microwave has been difficult. When teachers or others, who use the microwave, do not cover their food, it will splatter. If it goes uncleaned it will leave hardened food particles which, according to Malkmus, is hard to clean. She hopes in the future they will be more efficient while cleaning. The next lunchroom clean-up that will occur will be Thursday Sept. 11. NHS members who will be involved will include Claire Wiley, Jamie Hetlage, Julia Crets, Rachel Elder, and others.

To benefit the community even more, NHS has planned several more upcoming opportunities for members to earn points. NHS President Mensur Koso and other officers have thought of several of these opportunities and other times events or members of the community will email Malkmus, Koso, or other officers to ask for help. Some of these upcoming events include Storm Drain Markings (Which occur at the first Saturday of every month), Parent Teacher Conferences, and a tree planting that will occur the Saturday of Homecoming.

“We try to fix problems in the community,” Koso said. “We can’t get it all done, but it’s a good opportunity to help the community as a whole.”
