USA Women’s Soccer Team to Play in St. Louis

USA Womens Soccer Team to Play in St. Louis

The United States Women’s National Team(USWNT) has announced that they play a pre World Cup friendly at Busch Stadium against New Zealand on April 4. Tickets went on sale January 30, selling over 23,000 on the first day, and has sold 29,000 as of press time.

The USWNT will use this game to prepare for the FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015, where they shutterstock_47472001 copywill be playing against Australia, Sweden, and Nigeria. New Zealand will be playing against the host nation, Canada, China, and the Netherlands. The US, who are currently ranked number two in the FIFA World Rankings behind Germany, are one of the favorites to win the title, along with defending champions Japan, Germany, Brazil, France, and Canada.

The USWNT will also be playing in many other friendlies to prepare for Canada 2015, which icludes a trip to Portugal, even though they’re playing Norway, Switzerland, and Iceland, in Portugal, and not Portugal. They have already played two games, a 0-2 loss to France and a 1-0 win against England. At home, they will not only be in St. Louis against New Zealand, but they’ll also be in San Jose against Ireland, Carson(LA) to play against Mexico, and Harrison, New Jersey to play South Korea.

In the last edition of the tournament, Germany 2011, the U.S. made it to the finals,  where they fell to Japan in penalty kicks. The US came second in their group, behind Sweden, and also played North Korea and Columbia. New Zealand failed to qualify for the knockout stages, finishing fourth in a group with England, Japan, and Mexico. They earned their only point after a 2-2 draw with Mexico.

Overall, the USWNT seems to be the overwhelming favorite for this game. New Zealand, who are currently ranked 18 in the FIFA World Rankings, will not only be facing the number two ranked team in the world, but they’ll also be up against what is sure to be a loud crowd in what is projected to be the best selling USWNT game in 11 years.
