Jensen’s Music Blog: Senses Fail/Man Overboard Split Review

Day 1: Senses Fail/Man Overboard Split Review

In early Feb., Senses Fail and Man Overboard set up pre orders for a special seven inch vinyl split. The split would be a brand new original song from each band and then a cover of a song from each others’ band. It’s an incredibly solid split, probably the best I’ve heard. I’ve wanted to do a review on this since it came out, but the ship date got pushed back on the record twice, and I waited to until I actually got the record to listen to it.

The Man Overboard side of the split starts out with a new song from them titled “One Fixed Point”. It’s an emotional song that sounds amazing and sounds almost exactly like what you’d expect out of Man Overboard. They essentially started the pop punk genre as it is now, so they have to stay pretty true to their sound. The interesting part of their split is the Senses Fail cover. They did their own rendition of “Cute When You Scream” off the album that jump started them into popularity, “Let It Enfold You”. They pull off the early 2000s emo sound much better than I expected them too. The original song is burned into my childhood and their cover absolutely did it justice.

The Senses Fail side of the split is the part I was looking forward to the most because I’ve always loved Senses Fail and have never been a huge fan of Man Overboard. Their side of the split starts with a new song titled “All You Need Is Already Within You” and it is heavy. It’s very reminiscent of “Renacer” in that aspect. It doesn’t sound anything like their old stuff, but that’s not a bad thing. It’s intense and fast paced and what I’ve grown to expect from them. They covered “Real Talk” off the Man Overboard album of the same title. It sounds very pop punk and it’s almost funny hearing Senses Fail go back to this sound. It sounds incredible and it works very well for them.

Overall, this split is great and I keep listening to it. I highly recommend it to anyone who likes pop punk.

Day 2: Band Plays a Gig On a Stage Made Entirely Out of Ice (Gigloo?)

On Tuesday March 30, Jaegermeister released a video to YouTube about their “Ice Cold Gig” in which prog metal band TesseracT  played on a stage made entirely out of ice. Check out the documentary below.

Pop-punk/easycore legends Four Year Strong announced that they are going to be releasing their fifth full length album on June 2. It will be self-titled, be 11 tracks long, and the closer will be a rerecorded version of “Go Down In History”, which came off of their EP they released in 2014 of the same title. Check out the tracklist and album artwork in the link below. Warning: The artwork is slightly NSFW.
