Tim Tebow Returns to the NFL

It’s Timmy Time! As of Monday, April 20, Tim Tebow is a member of the Philadelphia Eagles. This one-year deal gives the Eagles a plethora of quarterbacks that are mediocre at best: Matt Barkley (The Fresh Face), Sam Bradford (The Injury Just Waiting to Happen), Mark Sanchez (The Sanchize) and Tim Tebow (The I-Haven’t-Played-Since-2012 One). Through this jumbled mess at the quarterback position, though, only Sanchez and Tebow have playoff experience, and neither is as good as they used to be.

This deal raises an interesting question for the Eagles as a franchise. Why? Why would they need a fourth quarterback on their roster? In the NFL, the rule is always quality over quantity, but all the Eagles have is quantity. One theory is that they are trying to trade up in the draft, as there have been rumors of a possible trade for Bradford or Sanchez to the Cleveland Browns or Tampa Bay Buccaneers for a first-round pick. This would allow them to snag a great QB prospect like Brett Hundley, Bryce Petty or even Marcus Mariota if he slips that far in the draft. This would give Philly a solid quarterback for the future, but this will probably not happen. Most likely, the Eagles will not be able to make a trade, draft another mediocre quarterback, and hope for .500 season.

If Tebow does finally find a home in Philadelphia, it might not be the worst thing for the Eagles. Back in his playing days, Tebow was an above-average quarterback with a great football mind and play-making ability. In his time with the Broncos and Jets, he had 17 passing touchdowns on 2,422 passing yards and a 47.9 percent completion percentage and 12 rushing touchdowns on 989 rushing yards. While these may not be the most spectacular numbers, Tebow certainly got the job done, winning more playoff games in one year with Denver than Bradford has won in five years with the St. Louis Rams, but that’s none of my business.

Best case scenario for the Eagles, they either trade Sam Bradford for a higher pick in the draft, hopefully landing Marcus Mariota, a quarterback that would fit perfectly into Chip Kelly’s new-age offense. Mariota would make an immediate impact on any offense he’s in with his combination of mental acuity and running speed- a skill set much like Tim Tebow’s. Mariota will then attempt to lead the team to a decent record, which will be difficult because of the simple fact that all of the core players of the Eagles will be completely different than they were last season. The Eagles can only hope that Tebow provides some sort of veteran leadership on a team that is leaderless and lost. I don’t see the Tebow deal working out that well, but I do feel that Tebow will provide a new layer of depth for the fast and furious Philadelphia Eagles.
