Jake’s Take on MLB Offseason Winners

Softball vs FZW on Aug. 25 (photo by abby temper)

With all of the week’s hype centering around the the NFL’s Pro Bowl and Super Bowl, the MLB has been quietly fortifying itself against the harsh winter elements and gathering the troops for another Spring Training coming much sooner than one might think. Teams will be reporting to their respective spring training facilities between Feb. 18-27, so there are just about three weeks until baseball will be right back into the hearts of fanatics across the country. With this in mind, I’m here to break down the top five offseason winners around the MLB in these past two months.

  • Chicago Cubs– Jason Heyward, John Lackey, Ben Zobrist, Rex Brothers

As much as I hate to say it, the Cubs seem to have things figured out, and they are a scary team. Even merely typing the words out is making my hands feel grimey. I digress, the Cubs are going to be a very, very good team in 2016. Ben Zobrist may be the most versatile player in the modern era; Jason Heyward gives the Cubs the most powerful lineup in the league; and John Lackey gives Chicago one of the most complete starting pitching staffs. The only area the Cubs didn’t actively pursue to upgrade is their bullpen, which already has a top-notch 7-8-9 combination of Travis Wood, Pedro Strop and Hector Rondon. It’s going to be hard enough to keep the Cubs’ offense from scoring, and it’s going to be even more difficult to score against their late-inning pitchers. After 107 years, “next year” might finally arrive for Chicago.

  • Detroit Tigers Justin Upton, Jordan Zimmermann, Francisco Rodriguez

Al Avila has himself one heck of a year. The Tigers were the Spring Training favorites to win the AL Central last year but finished dead last with a record of 74-87. Granted, injuries plagued Detroit from day one, but one would expect a stronger showing from the team that has steamrolled that division for the past five years. Excuses and expectations aside, the Tigers just want to put 2015 behind them, and they have certainly done so by bolstering nearly every aspect of their team. Justin Upton offers a usable, if slightly below-average, glove in left field while providing the team with an imposing one-two punch of Upton and Miguel Cabrera in the middle of their lineup. They’ve also given themselves a fearsome pitching staff with the addition of Jordan Zimmermann behind Justin Verlander at the top of their rotation, not to mention K-Rod closing games out. I say again, like last year, watch out for for the Tigers.

  • Arizona Diamondbacks– Zack Greinke, Shelby Miller, Jean Segura, Tyler Wagner

Of course the Diamondbacks made this list. Aside from trading away their ace, Chase Anderson, they added two viable aces in Zack Greinke and Shelby Miller to give them arguably the best top two starters in the National League. The only problem is that the pair will cost the club dearly in the coming years. Miller comes with a $4.35 million price tag and at the price of the 2015 number-one draft pick Dansby Swanson. Greinke, on the other hand, will cost the D-backs $206.5 million over the next six years, plus the potential for more with deferred money and playing incentives. But any player with a 1.66 season-long ERA is a great addition to any team. Arizona also nabbed Jean Segura and Tyler Wagner in trade with the Milwaukee Brewers to provide some stability to the middle of the infield and a fresh young arm to the bullpen. This is going to be a fun bang-or-bust year for a lot of teams, but none more so than the Diamondbacks.

  • San Francisco Giants– Johnny Cueto, Jeff Samardzija, Denard Span

Another West Coast team, the San Francisco Giants. The Giants have a lot going for them in 2016. First, Denard Span adds some much-appreciated balance to their outfield. In 2015, Span focused more on his hitting, resulting in an impressive .301 average, the second year in a row that he has topped .300. His stolen bases total suffered a bit, but that is to be expected with age. The Giants also added Johnny Cueto and Jeff Samardzija to their pitching staff, making the Giants’ starting five the best such unit in baseball. In addition to the impressive pitching staff that the Giants have assembled, 2016 is an even year, and San Francisco has been the home of the last three World Series championships in even-numbered years. That’s called a selective winning tradition, a phrase that I just made up, and it’ll be up to the Giants to continue this trend.

  • Chicago White Sox– Todd Frazier, Brett Lawrie, Alex Avila, Matt Albers

On the South Side, we have the White Sox. I’ve already dissected their northern counterparts for the shrewd deals happening on their end of town, and now it is up to the South Siders to round out this top five. Starting at the less-influential pickups, the team re-signed veteran reliever Matt Albers, and they picked up Alex Avila off of free agency to supplement for the loss of Tyler Flowers to the Atlanta Braves. They also managed to snag both Todd Frazier and Brett Lawrie in trades, effectively giving them a great three-quarters of an infield, with Lawrie moving over to second base to make room for Frazier at third. The only question mark remains with Tyler Saladino at shortstop, but with a solid lineup built around young talent and improving starting pitching, the White Sox are poised to make waves in the next few years, if not in 2016.
