Throughout the summer MAC Scholars sponsors Shelly Parks and Ashley Seiss visited a number of colleges and universities with the students in the program. These tours gave students who may not have had the opportunity to tour colleges a way to still assess their future. Sophomore Jasmyne Moody learned many new things on these tours and has narrowed her college selection down.

“We went to MOBAP, UMSL, MO Tech and many other colleges, just so we could see the opportunities and the scholarships we could earn,” Moody said. “I learned a lot of information but I learned the most from UMSL even though I might be a little biased, because UMSL was my favorite.”

Seiss and Parks worked with students of color in hopes of helping them find proper schooling post-high school since marginalized students tend to have a harder time narrowing down college choices. Seiss realized during her time in Nashville that certain students have a harder time in school due to societal factors than others and wanted to use her platform as a teacher to help those students.

“For some students it offered up an opportunity that they didn’t even know existed,” Seiss said. “Where I came from in Nashville, the students that I taught looked like the students in MAC Scholars, and so for me it’s a natural progression of involvement.”
