A Closer Look Into the New iPhone 15 Release and the Features Included in It

On Sept. 22, 2023, Apple released the new iPhone 15 alongside its Pro and Max versions in stores. The iPhone 15, which starts at $800 for its base model, comes with various new changes.

The most notable change with the iPhone 15 is the transition from its lightning charging cord to the universal USB-C. Apple has switched to comply with new European regulations mandating mobile devices to use USB-C ports. Those without a USB-C charger would need to purchase a new one to charge their iPhone 15. FHN Engineering teacher Mike Green was one of the first people to buy the new iPhone.

“[I think] the biggest change is the new port, the USBC. I plugged my phone in at 30% and it was at 80% 20 minutes later,” Green said.

More notable changes from the iPhone 14 include the new titanium outer shell, designed to be lighter and more durable than the previous model’s aluminum and glass frames; and new colors for the phone.

“I’m excited [about] the new colors, they look pretty,” junior Angel Tolota said.

Another feature coming to the iPhone 15 is the Dynamic Island, a feature previously limited to only the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max versions. The Dynamic Island will now be included with all versions of the new iPhone. The Dynamic Island sits at the top of the screen and changes its appearance based on the user’s activity.

In addition, the emergency satellite messaging capability, a feature carried over from the iPhone 14, allows the phone to send short messages even in areas without a cell signal.

With prices ranging from $800 to $1200 depending on the model, the higher price of the new phone has some buyers getting the iPhone 14 or lower to save money. as the upgrades from the iPhone 14 to 15 are relatively minimal.

“It’s just a slightly better phone, the camera is better, the screen is sharper, the menus are faster, and the phone just feels smoother,” Green said.

Although there are various positives in the new release, many also see negative factors hindering the product’s appeal.

“I think they are unnecessary and expensive,” Tolota said.
