Deer hunting begins in late November and ends in late January. Hunting helps to manage population size and puts food on the table. Hunting can connect you to the beauty of nature and save money at the same time.  

“I think people should hunt because of the rising prices of meat with that being said, you get meat for free other than processing fees and paying for your tags and it helps with population control and helping with the environment when being done legally,” Joey Linneman said.

Deer hunting is a very important aspect that happens in the world today. If hunting didn’t happen there wouldn’t be enough food and resources for deer to live. Managing the deer population is very crucial for today’s life. Hunting can be a very inexpensive sport. It depends on where you hunt, what type of weapon you use, and what you wear.

“I normally wear a camo coat, and camo bibs but when you rifle hunt you also need to wear an orange vest and orange hat,” Zach Skolnick said. “I have rubber boots that aren’t isolated and boots that are insulated to keep my feet warm.”

Deer hunting is done with just a few important things. Something to kill a deer is most important like a bow or rifle. Clothing is also a very important thing like wearing orange to follow the law. There are many different ways to hunt like hunting out of a blind, a tree stand, or on the ground.

“I usually do spot and stalk which is when you pretty much follow a deer trying to close the gap between you and the deer so you can get a shot,” Skolnick said. 

Spot and stalk doesn’t require a blind or tree stand for someone to hunt out of. Tree stands and blinds cost a lot of money. For spot and stalk, all you need is land to hunt on. There are many places to hunt open to the public. 

“I tend to hunt over soybeans or corn. When the plants are harvested deer tend to eat and scavenge on the droppings left over from the combine,” Melissa Bertram said. “My husband Tim [Bertram] owns 660 acres of land and about 330 of that land is farmed,”.

According to hunters, hunting over crops can be very helpful. Deer tend to be lured in by the leftover droppings left from when the field was harvested. Hunting can be inexpensive and fun for anyone who would like to try a new hobby or just enjoy the outdoors.
