Junior Logan Scott advanced to the semifinals and placed 20th at the Class 1 Diving State Championship on Friday Nov. 10th at the St. Peters Rec-Plex. Scott is FHN’s only diver and has been diving for FHN for two years. During his time diving, Scott has qualified for the state championship competition every year. His performance this year was significantly better than last year.

“I did a lot better this year,” Scott said. “Last year it was a rough ride getting last place and this year I got twentieth on the dot.”

Even though he performed super well at state, Scott isn’t going to settle for 20th place and is still focusing on improving his diving. As he improves throughout the upcoming year, Scott hopes that he can perform even better at state next year.

“It’s interesting, but honestly I feel like I need to do better,” Scott said. “I feel as though practicing more will push me to do better next year.”

Scott credits his coach, Dave Nielsen, for helping him succeed. During his time diving, Nielson helped Scott grow as both an athlete and as a person. Nielsen spoke to Logan’s exponential growth as a diver in such a short time period.

“[Logan’s] improvement from last year to this year is like night and day,” Nielsen said. “I’m looking forward to getting more mental stability out of him, which is going to be a tough task to ask, but just more consistency.”

Given that schools in St. Charles County only have a few divers each, Nielsen coaches all of them, and they practice together. Scott cites his friendship with the divers he practices with as one of his favorite parts of the sport.

“I really have a great connection with all of the divers,” Scott said. “Even though they’re not in my school we really have a great connection.”
