The FHN mentors club hosted a Cocoa and Cram study session where students were invited to enjoy hot cocoa and study with peers for the upcoming finals on Jan 8. in the learning commons.

“We used to do this pre-Covid,” co-sponsor of mentors Kristen Johnson said. “We always had a day at the end of each semester where mentors came in and we set up a bunch of hot chocolate and cookies and the mentors would be there to help with any students who were studying.”

Due to COVID mentors had to put on hold on the study sessions before finals but are excited to bring it back and try different themes during future exam weeks.

“I hope to be able to get a lot of studying done in a stress-free environment,” sophomore Kaili Melton said. “I think that the quiet but not silent atmosphere will be helpful for people studying and learning.”

The study session took place alongside the after-school tutoring. Teachers were there to help the students study for their final exams and mentors helped where needed.

“You just are here to study, and I know sometimes that’s just a hard part for people,” Johnson said. “They feel like they have a million other things going on, but hopefully they see this as a structured time set aside to really look at their study guides. I also hope you can connect with other people like that.”

The mentors program is always trying to create activities in order to inspire unity and leadership within North. Along with running the transition day, the hot chocolate study session is another example of them promoting academics for all students at FHN and the hope they have to continue and create more opportunities for students in the future.

“I do hope that there will be more events like this in the future. I think it is a great place for students to go if they struggle studying in class or have a noisy or stressful environment at home,” Melton said. “Plus I think the cocoa makes it more fun and will make students want to come back and help them in the long run.”
