Steering Clear of the Road [Personal Column]

As I got into high school there was many things filling my schedule. Typically getting my license would have fallen into one of  the years accomplishments but as the year continues Thiings like practicing or how to change my headlights or how to even begin to parallel park escaped my mind.

I had gotten pretty scared of the road. I would practice and know how to drive but then I’d remember how many of my friends were on the road and was in no rush to follow them.

The first time I failed the test I had gone fully unprepared. I had barely been on the road and just wanted it for driving to school and back. It’s sad to say that I did not practice my parallel parking enough as I ran over the cone. The second time round I had actually been extremely prepared. I knew how to parallel park, I didn’t roll stops, and I over checked my mirrors all the time. That still was not enough for them to give me a license.

Struggling with those who work at the DMV seems to be my biggest issue. Recently Missouri DMV’s decided to come up with a new confusing system that has left me with very limited options and no questions answered on their websites. The closest DMV which was known to be the easiest to get a license became the hardest to get an appointment. The easiest where all you needed to do is show up has seemed to be the pickiest. When I say pickiest though I mean it, as my instructor on my second try got out in the middle of me parallel parking to pick up a nearby cone that had fallen. He then proceeded to tell me I took too long to park even when I was still under two minutes.

Thinking I was doing something wrong I looked towards licensed friends. This has led me to hear various stories that make me question how they’re allowed on the road whereas I’m not. In my worst cases I have run over curbs and I’m very proud to say I’ve never almost run over a pedestrian like many peers I know.

With all this I still will be remaining positive for whenever I end up going on my last try hopefully before I turn 17. At the very least I’ll relate to ‘Drivers License’ more each time I listen to it while driving with my permit.
