Why do people make fun of other’s beliefs?

If there is one thing that I have seen throughout my entire high school career, it would be how so many people make fun and criticize other students for what they believe in and how they practice it. I have even, at one point in time, been a subject to this and I do know what it feels like, and well frankly, it’s not the best feeling in the world.

We see other students and friends of many faiths and religions walk down our halls everyday, it’s true and we know it. But what I really want to know is why some people build up the nerve to ask that one person a stupid question that either embarrasses them because of what the believe in, or makes them feel ashamed for how they practice it. It makes no sense and it’s one of the rudest, most inconsiderate things you could possibly do! We all remember what happened nine years ago on September 11th, and after all that had been done many people of the Islamic religion were criticized and scrutinized to the most highest degree, which shouldn’t have happened. If you actually take the time to step back and look at the situation around us as a whole, you’ll see that sure, they are part of the same religion yes, but that doesn’t mean that they believe the same things that the other groups related to them do. This really did set me off the other day when I saw a student walking in the hallway, minding their own business, when some other students just heckling them because of their cultural and religious background and I really did feel bad for the kid!

So I really just want to know why we do that? It makes no sense, and sure you might come off as teasing when really it’s just a horrible thing to do and for the most part why can’t we all accept everyone else’s beliefs and take them for who they really are? We always here that “the next generation” is going to try to make the world “a better place”, so why can’t we start right here, right now?
