Fall break is usually a time to sleep in and hang out with friends, but some students signed up for A+ tutoring hours and sacrificed their fall break to get things done. The places where students did their tutoring hours were at Vacation Station at Henderson, Becky David, and Harvest Ridge.
Vacation Station is from 6:30 a.m. to 6:00 pm, but students did not have to arrive right at 6:30 in morning, in fact, they could arrive an hour before vacation station ended. Also, students will have an hour for lunch.
When A+ students first walk into the school they sign in their time, then they get a sticky note saying their name, so the children know the A+ students names and teachers. At Becky David, students did not receive any of the rules when they first started; they were told about the rules along the way. So fair warning to future A+ students who are participating at Vacation Station in the future, the rules are: no cell phones, no talking about your personal life to the kids, kids can’t touch or play with your hair.
“Because you could get lice”, said Mrs. Williams a Vacation Station counselor.
You have to pass out snacks, and defiantly interact with the kids all the time. If you don’t, then the teachers won’t count your hours. You cannot stay in a large group, the teachers will get mad, but being with another student will not affect anybody. One thing that children are allowed to do is hold your hand, which they will do a lot.
The A+ students did enjoy participating in the activities with the kids like recess, crafts, gym, computer lab, drawing, sitting with them as a teachers reads a story, and playing with the toys that the school has provided for them.
“I thought it was a lot of fun,” said Katey Schulte.
