On Nov. 10, 21 students headed to Kansas City for the National Journalism Convention.
At the convention, the publications staff received several awards. In the Best of Show category, the North Star took fifth place and eighth place in Special Edition for the first day paper, FHNtoday.com took third place and Excalibur yearbook took first place for the second year in a row.
“I feel these awards are well deserved,” North Star editor Kelsey Bell said. “We all work really hard and it’s a good feeling to be rewarded for all of that.”
Along with the group awards, many individual awards were given at the convention.
“I was excited that I got an award,” North Star staff member Paige Yungermann said. “I didn’t think I’d get anything, so it was pretty cool.”
With or without the awards, many of the students believe the convention was a good experience overall.
“It was a good time,” Excalibur editor Alia El-Qunni said. “I got to know the staff a little bit better and learn a lot of new things. I can’t wait until next year.”
