You know what grinds my gears? Sodexo, and their corporate facade.
For those who don’t know, Sodexo is the company responsible for providing “healthy” and “nutritious” food for our cafeteria. Sodexo loves to throw these words around, but without any actual evidence to back it up. Upon research, one would discover the lack of any nutritional facts or meal plans contained on their website. The only thing I could find are these generic phrases and stories about how they’ve helped ensure a “successful” learning environment
“Sodexo’s acclaimed nutrition programs teach students how to make healthy eating and lifestyle decisions for today, and for life.” -Ambiguous quote taken from Sodexo’s website.
My argument here is not that they don’t provide healthy food for students, they provide meal plans designed to maximize profit, and in this case, are unhealthy as well.
Typically, on a 20 student basis, 17 of the 20 students choose to purchase food like fries and greasy pizza, over the menu meal. The menu meal usually features a main course of a protein rich food and as many sides as you’d like. And of those 3 students only 1 takes advantage of the sides (sides being vegetables and fruits with actual nutritional value). Sodexo knows students don’t care about the prices, because their mommies and daddies pay for their meal plan regardless, which means they can jack up the prices on the smaller portioned unhealthier foods.
So, although they provide healthy food, they primarily profit off of the various unhealthy food that the majority of students purchase.
And that’s what grinds my gears.
