Late in 7th hour on Monday, the Student Council advisers announced the highly anticipated results from one of the most competitive elections in years. There were races in all but one of the positions up for grabs.
The winners are:
Ashlynn Laspe- President
Nicole Yuede– Vice President
Hannah Brown– Secretary
Liz Leonard– Treasurer
Heather Deckard– Parliamentarian
Ashley Butterfield– Chief of Staff
Ashlynn Laspe was elected Student Council President, winning more than 87 percent of the popular vote, 36 percent above the required 51 percent that she needed. At the end of the school year, she will become the first junior to be Student Council President in the school’s history.
“I don’t want any of the problems with discipline that we’ve had this year,” Laspe said. “I hope we’re a little more responsible.”
The elections for Parliamentarian and Chief of Staff were not nearly as close as the races for President and Secretary, each coming down to a handful of votes.
In spite of the results of the election, the new officers are already looking forward to next year. Just ten minutes after the results were announced, President-Elect was in the Student Council office preparing for Cabinet interviews which are next Monday. The officers are already running with plans for next year.
“I want to work to keep us from wasting as much as we do,” Laspe said. “I want to make Student Council more efficient.”
With the announcement of new officers, the inner workings of StuCo are starting to work on getting ready for next year, incited by renewed energy,
“I am always excited for incoming people,” Student Council Sponsor Jani Wilkens said. “They always come in with energy and get me fired up for next year.”
