After a nail biting match against Francis Howell Junior Austin Haynes, Sophomore Robbie Nicolli qualified to move on to the Missouri State championships in Springfield, Friday, May 28.
“I am really excited (about going to state). It is a big step in my tennis career,” Nicolli said.
Nicolli’s match against Hayes was tough. He lost the first set 2-6 but he was able to persevere and win the next two sets 7-5 and 6-0.
“I felt extremely nervous during the first set but became more focused as the match went on,” Nicolli said.
Since the win, Nicolli has continued to practice and began to mentally prepare himself. His preparation includes trying to relax before matches.
“[The hardest part will be] winning matches because there are so many tough opponents at state,” Nicolli said.
Nicolli will not be alone during his showing at state, seniors Ben Hess and Dan Brodnick will be playing as a doubles team.
“[I’m excited about] playing other players that are in the same position, who are all looking to win,” Nicolli said. “We should have some great matches.”
