The Star Trek Convention is being featured at the Science Center from now until May 28, and it holds 45 years of authentic props, costumes, models, and life size replicas that were used in the television series and in the feature films.
During the time the exhibit is being held, there are First-Friday events where hard-core fans from all around can participate in special activities and even enjoy in a special showing of Star Trek the movie, free of charge after 10 p.m.
“It would be a blast from the past, which may excite Star Trek veterans,” Freshmen Carl Treas said. “It may even peak the interest of some sci-fi lovers who have yet to watch even a single episode.”
So far guests have made appearances such as the actor Robert Picardo, who played in Star Trek: The Voyager, programs including Journey to Mars, and there have been a series of competitions like a Star Trek costume contest. The theme for December’s first Friday in the convention was special guest, Jeff Lewis, who was Emmy-nominated for his make-up artist work in the films. The themed nights offer more than just the exhibit and give the people hands-on experiences.
“For once, [fans] get to participate in something that was a part of the series,” long-time fan junior Dan Wolters said. “For once they get to live in this sci-fi world that they have loved for so long.”
This convention is for the whole family, and during the holiday season and through the new year, tickets will be sold at a discounted rate. First Fridays of the month offers several other discounts as well. Be sure not to miss the next First Friday event, it will be held on Jan. 6 and will have a Star Trek Trivia Night.
“It’s affordable and visitors tell us that they look forward to the next Star Trek exhibit we have,” Special Exhibitions Director Jackie Monnet said. “It’s interesting to see the ties between science and science fiction.”
