Sophomore Hannah Rosen is one of the only students at FHN who is taking an online foreign language class, instead of the traditional foreign languages that are offered. Rosen has chosen to learn Japanese.
“I’m really into anime and the majority of it is in Japanese,” Rosen said. “So that was the main reason, and I also really like to draw Anime.”
Rosen is the only student who is currently taking Japanese which means that she is her own teacher. Rosen takes the online class during her study hall and makes her own work sheets as a study mechanism.
“The memorization is the hardest thing because the writing is a lot different than ours,” Rosen said. “It’s all in characters and this specific semester I had to learn 102 characters along with the pronunciations.”
Rosen’s friend Christina Towery believes that it is really cool that Rosen is learning a different language that is not extremely popular. Despite the fact that Japanese is only offered as an online class at FHN, Rosen aspires to one day visit Japan.
“Most people would say that they would want to learn a foreign language, but they would not put forth the effort,” Rosen’s friend Allison Lewis said. “But Hannah puts forth the effort and I think that it is a good experience for her.”
