According to the House of Committee on Veteran Affairs, 13 percent of all returning veterans are unemployed. The VOW to Hire Heroes Act of 2011 was signed last November to try and change this. The bill gives much needed job training to veterans and give tax credits to businesses hiring them.
Unfortunately, by decreasing these taxes, the government ultimately loses money and potentially increases our debt.
As much as I am against bringing in less money to an already troubled budget, I support this bill entirely. Thirteen percent may not sound like much, but consider the vastness of our military; more than one in every ten of those soldiers won’t be able to get work after returning from war.
I personally believe that with all the money we’re spending we can find room to help those who risk their lives fighting every day. I don’t want to be a country that sends our soldiers overseas, expecting them to be willing to die for us and then not do anything for them when they get out and need to be given a helping hand.
They are heroes in every sense of the word, and we have them standing in unemployment lines across the country.
It may increase our deficit, but I’d take that over spitting in the faces of our veterans.
