Politics. It’s a topic many students are not very experienced in. However, the members of the Young Democrats club want to change that. These students want to increase student participation in politics and increase awareness of issues.
“We think it’s important for more people to get involved with politics,” co-founder Luke Mayerhoefer said. “We just knew we could make a difference by starting this club.”
The Young Democrats club meets on Tuesday mornings at 6:50 in room 122. Their first meeting took place on April 10, and they are looking to expand their number of members.
“People should join our club because it’s important to have your voice heard and take part in politics,” co-founder Tyler Ludwig said. “It’s something that our society tends to neglect and not really take part of. It’s something that affects everybody regardless of your age or where you’re from.”
The Young Democrats club advocates getting involved and learning about the issues. They hope to inform others and help them become politically active.
“I wanted to get involved in politics early because it’s an important part of society and to get involved early in life is good,” Mayerhoefer said. “If everyone got involved earlier in life it would help everyone make a difference in politics later.”
In addition, the Young Democrats club hopes to encourage others to speak up about their political views.
“What I want to get out of this club is just for students who have these beliefs and want to share them to feel as if they have the environment to do so and to spread the word on things they’re passionate about,” club sponsor Whitney Harper said.
The main goal of the club is to get students involved with the political process. Members want to give others the tools to learn about political issues and let them decide for themselves.
“Overall, the club wants to achieve an increased awareness of the issue,” Harper said. “As citizens, as future voters, that’s very very important that we know the issues and the facts behind the issues–not just what we hear on the media, or not just what our parents say or our friends say. The number one thing that the Young Democrat group is going to focus on is becoming informed on different issues.”
