Volunteer Knights was in charge of the 2012 eyeglasses drive at FHN, which took place from Tuesday, Sept. 4 to Friday, Sept.14. Students donated their used and unwanted glasses to The Lions foundation for repairment to donate to students in need.
“I think the drive is a wonderful cause, glasses are very expensive and in order to do well in school students need to have good vision.” Kellie Voyles, teacher at FHN said.
More than four million pairs of unused glasses get throw away each year, by recycling old eyeglasses it only cost about eight cents and helps many people with vision problems regain their sight.
“Hopefully some kids will benefit from all the donations,” Voyles said. “It would be nice to help give back to The Lions foundation since they have helped out FHN in the past.”
In the beginning of each day, students with used or broken glasses dropped them off in the designated bags in each classroom. The glasses are then sent to The Lions foundation where they are repaired and given to people/students with sight problems who can’t afford their own medical treatment.
“I hope that we can collect glasses from the majority of the school,” Dominique Myers, student at FHN said. “It’s important that we help kids in need whenever we have the opportunity.”
