Coming off a five game losing streak, Varsity football is still searching for a win. Although they are somewhat discouraged, the team is hoping that attaining a victory this Saturday will bring back spirit and excitement.
“Quitting should never be an option,” head varsity coach Brandon Gregory said, “Everyone needs to play their role to dig ourselves out of this hole.”
Ready to go out and fight for their first win, the Knights have been preparing for this week’s game against Fort Zumwalt West. The game is to take place at West on Saturday, Sept. 29, at 1:00 p.m. West is 2-3 for the season, and according to junior Alex Heigl, they are beatable because they lost a lot of seniors from last year. Even though the game is away and on a Saturday, the team sees this as to their advantage.
“It gives an extra day to prepare for the game and injured players an extra day to recover,” Gregory said.
Saturday’s game has multiple elements of interest. Getting back to starting positions in the game are players such as Drake Kruep who had been out on injury. According to Gregory, players to look out for include juniors Danny Goggin and Brett McGilligan, as well as senior Cody Vogt. Also, the Knights are debuting a completely new starting defense in hopes of finding a way to take home the win.
“We are starting a whole new defense to put more pressure on the quarterback and make him mess up more,” Heigl said.
This week the Knights plan to approach the game, in Heigl’s words, “as a team, not individuals, and do what the coaches tell [them], not what they personally want to do.” If each player does their job in the game to the best of their ability, the results should be satisfactory.
“I’m excited for the game and I’m ready to go out and win,” junior Ethan Bond said, “Be there or be square.”
