On Nov. 29 Volunteer Knights members went around the school collecting donations for the hat day. Students were allowed to wear a hat as long as they donated a dollar. This was the first of two hat days raising money for the adopt a family program here at North.
“I didn’t know that the money I donated was going to adopt a family here at North, but now that I know it is I feel good that I can help someone have a great Christmas,” junior Maddie Nagel said.
The adopt a family program helps students have a better Christmas by purchasing items they have picked out and placed on their wish list. The program was started by the main office and eventually branched out to groups like Mu Alpha Theta, NHS, and Volunteer Knights.
“Originally we planned to adopt a family of our own [outside of the school] but then we heard the main office does one every year so were just donating all the money we make to keep it within the school,” secretary Colleen McCurry said.
Overall the hat day was a success making $110. The next hat day is scheduled for Dec. 13 when they are hoping to meet their goal of $300. By raising this much money Volunteer Knights can help about four students get what they want for Christmas.
“I’m glad we are able to keep it inside our school and I know we made a difference within our community,” McCurry said.
