FHN teacher Brian Santos was today given the Teacher of the Year award. Santos teaches Spanish 1, 3, and 4 classes. The two previous Teacher of the Year award winners are Math teachers Patty Bartell and Steve Willott.
UPDATE: On Thursday January 31, Brian Santos had been announced as FHN teacher of the year. This is Santos’ seventh year teaching and his sixth at North. This is his first time being nominated and his first time winning the award.
“This is the pinnacle of my teaching career,” said Santos. “I take this as an honor to my family. This is true recognition from my colleagues, colleagues I respect and admire.”
Voting for teacher of the year is a two step process. The first round consist of nominating the teachers and from there the ballot is made up of the top five teachers from that round. Step two is actually voting for the teachers who are believed to be the teacher of the year.
“We had a two or three day window to submit our nominees,” Dave Fritz, world language department head said. “Afterwards, we had a ballot of five set up, and from there, we voted on who we wanted.”
Santos is now headed on to the district teacher of the year award. He must now write three essays on his educational philosophy and a professional biography.
“I put as much of myself in my teaching as possible “ Santos said. I try to incorporate the things that I love into my teaching.”
