The Varsity Knights basketball team squared off against the FZE in the first round of Districts on February 25. The Knights prevailed by two points in this edge of the seat thriller.
“Districts is like a fresh start; you win: you move on, you lose: you return jerseys,” Coach Darrell Davis said.
The first period brought back and forth scoring and lead changes. This continued over to the second period. Midway through the second period the Knights were down 17-16. With a late surge by Kyle Lemons and Derrick Scarbrough, the Knights ended the half with a 23-22 lead.
The Knights carried over their intensity from the first half into the third period. The Knights went on a 7-0 run halfway through the 3rd period. The Knights ended the 3rd with a 37-32 lead.
With one period remaining, the two teams stepped onto the court. The Lions were able to tie up the game at 47 with 32 seconds to go. Lemons was able to create a steal on the imbound pass and force a foul in the process. He stepped to the line with only seconds remaining. He sank two out of two which ended up being the winning baskets in the game. The Knights went on to win 49-47.
“We moved the ball well and did what we needed to do to win,” junior James Gleeson said.
With the win, the Knights advance to the next round of Districts to face the number-one seeded FZN.
“It will be a close game and we will have to give it our all for the victory,” junior Josh Carpenter said.
