Winter guard competed at FHN’s annually held Art in Motion competition Feb. 23. The competition is used to raise money for all the band programs and has earned them more than $20,000 in the past two years.
The team received 1st place, although they were not competing against any other team at this competition. The team is going to take their scores and compare them to other teams that are competing across the country.
“We are going to Nationals in April so we compare our scores to other teams across the country to see how much we need to practice, because we will eventually have to compete against them at Nationals,” junior Sydney Hardin said.
The team practices over 10 hours a week preparing for competitions and members are happy with their performance.
“We did very well. We made silly mistakes that we will fix for next time, but we tried our best and that is what counts,” junior Catherine House said.
The team will hear what the judges have to say on Feb. 26, and will make changes to their program based on those comments.
“We always take into consideration the judges’ comments, because they know best. Next competition we will be more prepared and make the necessary changes,” freshman Lauren Arata said.
Art in Motion was the team’s fifth competition this season, and their fourth 1st place. Members are more than pleased with how the season is going.
“We have been in the top two every competition, there’s not much more we could ask for,” Hardin said.
For Arata, the best part of the competition was not receiving 1st place. It was getting to hear all her friends’ and family’s reactions.
“Whenever we were done, the audience’s reaction was so great. We knew by the applause and standing ovations the we did extremely well,” Arata said.
