As students walk through the art hallway, located from rooms 160 to 165, they admire the murals of famous painting on the walls, but when they reach Art club sponsor Michael Leistner’s room, a new half-finished mural catches their eyes.
Every year, the Art Club members get the chance to leave their mark on the school by painting a mural on the walls of the art hallway. In the past, the small group, whose numbers this year fluctuate between three members to as many as 10, have plastered the works of other artists on the blocks of the school. But this year, Art Club members will be painting a mural that they designed themselves.
“We couldn’t really decide on one idea,” junior Samantha Bauer said. “So Brian came up with this design that incorporated everything we wanted. It’s all of our ideas combined.”
Sophomore Brian Welker is the mastermind behind the painting, which features Batman riding his pirate ship named “the Bat-boat-bile” that is complete with butterfly sails and, just for good measure, a dragon in the background.
“It really just came to me when we were meeting,” Welker said. “[The mural] is coming along really nicely, we just need to do some more painting.”
Art Club meets tentatively every other Thursday after school for about an hour. They have been meeting for this year’s annual mural since a few weeks into the school year.
