Francis Howell North swept Fort Zumwalt North at the boys volleyball home game March 19.
“Today’s victories told me and the rest of the boys that we have the potential to do pretty good this year on all levels of play. I’m anticipating a good season,” sophomore JV player Miles Thies said.
It was the opening game for the boys’ season which meant the team would play together for the first time, giving insight to what might happen the rest of the season.
The freshman team, composed of entirely new and inexperienced players, won both of their games.
“I think we did pretty good for the first game, especially freshmen,” freshman player Nick Gehricke said. “If the rest of the season went like this, I think we’d do good. I believe we can win more games, a lot more games if we fix some things. It was our first time playing competitively together but we should’ve talked more and been more aggressive.”
The main problem the boys faced was themselves; many of the points scored by FZN was due to North players missing hits, or messing up serves, resulting in a more difficult match for the boys.
“We definitely need to work on our serves and hits, those are how you score the majority of the points in the game. Hitting hard is important, but it doesn’t matter how hard you hit the ball if it’s not inside the lines,” junior and varsity player Logan Bergman said.
High school volleyball matches are based off of a best of three games system: the first team to win two games wins. All three levels won the first two matches of their game, ending the games quickly.
The boys lost the majority of their varsity players last year, causing a large change in the team. This meant new players, getting used to how everyone around them would play.
“Today was an example of what varsity could do this year, if we keep it up, or even better, improve,” Bergman said.
