On March 19, with the crowd cheering, the players’ hearts racing, and the sound of the referees whistle, the 2013 men’s Volleyball season began. After a disappointing season last year, the Varsity team was excited to get back on the court for the new season.
“For the first game of the season, I am most excited to see the team pull together and hopefully pull off a win on all three levels,” outside hitter Logan Bergman said.
On March 19, the Knights, at home, took on the Fort Zumwalt North Panthers. During the first game, the score stayed close as neither team could gain the edge. FZN hurt themselves with many missed serves and the Knight’s defense was slow to react as they were beat by tips throughout the game. The Knights, behind hitters Stein and Reichert, were able to hold on and take the first game with a final score of 27-25.
“We played off the other team’s mistakes well and minimized our own,” said senior Defensive Specialist Jake Tecklenburg.
For the second game, FHN had a slow start being down 0-4 but quickly tied it back up. There were many lead changes as each team struggled with their hitting. The Panthers gained most of their points on Knight’s errors such as missed serves and being called for lifts. After an ace by junior Lewis Stein, the Knights began to take control of the game as they went on a 7-0 run to end the game with a final score of 25-19. Stein had the game winning block to take the match in straight games.
“It was a good game and I’m glad we got our first win. Next game, we need to improve our intensity and hitting,” said junior Ethan Bond
The Varsity team’s next game is Thursday March 21, at Fort Zumwalt South.
