On Tuesday, September 3, the boys’ swimming team will compete in their first meet of the season against Fort Zumwalt South. This year FHN has a total of 15 boys on the team, most of them returning sophomores and juniors. The boys have
come together and worked hard at five evening practices a week to be better than last year.
“These boys are young and some are inexperienced and need some more work, but they have great attitudes and have really pushed and cheered each other on,” head coach Steve Kelly said.
The team is trying to focus on increasing their times, gaining endurance and working on technique so they can qualify for state finals and come out with a state title. They’ve been using fins to help with leg strength and pushing off when they start. The team also uses pool buoys to help with body technique while swimming.
“We’re trying to gain everything lost over the off season and all learn all four strokes to be at our best for the season,” sophomore Ben Moxley said.
This year, the team also has two divers, Matt Jewson and Pete Lucido, on their roster. Having these two new members on the team could really help the team to score higher points. Along with counting on the divers to help the team excel, they also have two swimmers they are counting on to lead them to multiple victories, Sean Pirrone and Zac Fletcher.
“Sean leads by example and really knows how to help all of the swimmers with their problems,” Kelly said. “Zac has the elder role as the only senior and encourages the whole team on to help them succeed.”
