This past Saturday, September 7, the Francis Howell North Drumline competed at the Mozingo Music Percussion Contest located at Francis Howell North. Drumline performed “The Boxer” and placed ninth out of ten.
“I was disappointed with how we placed,” Drum Major Emma Pursley said. “But I was really proud of the percussionist and the performance we gave.”
According to Kevin Balch, Front Ensemble section leader, the band performed well considering how early in the season it is, and the music was good. According to Kevin, the band is considerably smaller than the other schools’ in their division which puts them at a disadvantage.
“I think we didn’t place in the top three because we have such a small group compared to other schools in our division, and we need to work on playing more as an ensemble.” Balch said.
Drumline hopes to take the time before their next performance to use the constructive criticism they received from the judges to work on their routine. One of the things they hope to work on is remembering some rhythms and techniques when performing. Their next performance is on September 14.
“It was a solid performance and the judges had many good things to say about it,” Jacob Lesinski, Battery Section leader, said. “I believe that this will be one of our most successful seasons yet.”
