Imagine being in the middle of playing a volleyball game. The team is down and almost all hope is lost. Suddenly you hear a noise. It is a very loud noise. This noise sounds like it could be saying “Let’s go
Knights!” You look over to see the face of one fan dressed in a ridiculous outfit screaming at the top of his lungs.
This fan won’t lose hope.
He can’t lose hope.
He will never lose hope.
He is Mike Butterfield.
“The way you feel when you are being cheered for is so amazing,” junior Mike Butterfield said. “It gives you a reason to fight and win.”
Mike is an active member in The Goonies, a group of students who cheer at the sports games at FHN. Mike goes to just about every FHN sports game there is to go to and can be heard pretty easily in the stands. His favorite sports to cheer for are football, soccer, volleyball, basketball, track, and cross country because in these he can get the most into the cheers.
“You can really get into other teams heads when you are cheering,” Mike said. “When the other team hears the support our team has it scares them.”
Some of Mike’s favorite cheers are just a simple “Let’s go Knights” or a fun one like “Hey cheerleaders” which gets the crowd and the cheerleaders interacting with each other. He loves dressing up for nights like the pink out games, games where the crowd dresses in all out pink and the nerd night, when the crowd dresses up like nerds.
Although Mike gives a lot of spirit himself, he can’t do it himself. Mike and the Goonies ask that everyone come to the games, let loose, and cheer like you just don’t care.
“I have had some of the most fun ever cheering at the games,” Mike said. “If there is anyway you can support your team and show them you love them, it is by showing up and cheering.”
