Winning one game against a rival team is a big accomplishment, but sweeping a rival on their home court in four games is even a bigger accomplishment.
This is what the JV boys and girls and Varsity boys and girls basketball teams did against rival Francis Howell Central Spartans last night.
“There is no bigger rush than being able to beat your rival on their own court,” president of the Goonies Brandon Chac said.
The night started off with both JV teams playing against the Spartans. The Girls JV team finished off their game first beating down the Spartans winning the game 38-16. While that game was finishing the JV boys team was fighting a close game against the other JV boys team. The Knights had a one point lead with 1:16 left in the game, then junior Gabe Grote hit a three to put the Knights up by four. Then the Spartans quickly tied the game up taking the game into overtime. A minute and a half into over the game was tied with 30 seconds left in overtime and the Knights had the ball with one last chance to win. Soon after junior point guard Elliot Montgomery got fouled and made both free throws to give the Knights the win 54-52.
In the next game the Varsity Girls took on the 2-10 Spartans. The Knights started the game out going down 2-9 quickly but quickly came back and took the lead and never looked back. The Lady Knights won that game 59-51.
“The game went better towards the second half when we found some defense and were able to stop their best player,” sophomore and two year Varsity player Maci May said. “I was so happy that we were able to beat our rival school with all of the fans that showed up to our game.”
After approximately a 45 minute delay due to FHC’s Hall of Fame night and a referee injury the Varsity boys basketball game started. The Knights quickly took a 6-2 lead but the Spartans quickly went on a 0-14 to make the score 6-16. The Knights came back quickly and the game stayed close the entire half with the Knights going into half down by three points. The Spartans stayed in the lead most of the game until senior James Gleeson got a three point play putting the Knights up two with three minutes left in the game. The Knights would not back down from that and finished off the game winning their 6th game in a row, 53-50.
“It is pretty exciting knowing that all four of our teams won against our rival because it has not happened in a long time, and I’m very proud of it,” senior and Varsity player Collin Toedtmann said.
