Today in his fifth hour walking class, Greg “Doc” Hennenfent was named the 2013-2014 Teacher of the Year. Andy Downs and Nancy Wade presented Hennenfent with an Edible Arrangements.
“I was pretty surprised when it happened, and it’s really neat that all the teachers in the school thought I was good enough to be teacher of the year,” Hennenfent said. “It’s pretty cool to be appreciated by your peers; I can’t thank them enough.”
Doc has been teaching in the district for 24 years, as has been at FHN for 19 years. This will be his last year teaching, as he will be retiring with the class of 2014.
“I think it’s cool because he’s been around here for a long time, he’s got his doctorate, and he deserves it because he’s a fun and dedicated teacher” Senior Dillon Runnels, who witnessed the awarding, said.
After FHN returned from winter break, teachers received forms to nominate specific teachers. These forms included why the specific teacher should be teacher of the year. The teachers then vote on finalists and the nominee with the most votes is named teacher of the year. Hennenfent now has the opportunity to be nominated as district teacher of the year, and from there state teacher of the year.
I think [he was nominated] for many reason.” Head Principal Andy Downs said. “His energy, enthusiasm, and his love of teaching. He is appreciated by everyone.”
