The final day of the Midwest Education Technology Conference (METC) kicked off Wed., Feb. 12, with a keynote from Dr. Lodge McCammon on flipping the classroom. The keynote started at 8 a.m. and included videos, songs, and choreographed dancing. Dr. McCammon covered transparency and accountability in the classroom, and ways in which teachers can better their teaching techniques.
“We have an opportunity to reinvent the twenty-first century classroom,” McCammon said. “I think it’s time every American teacher becomes a teacher of the world, a global teacher”
McCammon specializes in educational videos for the K-12 teaching world. His methods include songs, lessons, and condensed lectures. McCammon encourages teachers to take advantage of the technology they have at their disposal to change the classroom into something that is both more efficient, and interactive. McCammon demonstrated these principles with real-life examples during his presentation. While he spoke, McCammon used videos, lectures, songs and visual aids that he had created.
“He inspired me,” Wydown Middle school teacher Cathleen Fogarty said. “I’m going to try his methods when I go back to school.”
McCammon also had attendees group up and share ideas on how new techniques would improve their classrooms, and share their input with the crowd. Two were selected to come on stage. McCammon used them as an example of how to create and review educational videos. One of the participants was April Burton of Francis Howell Central High School.
“If all of our lessons were online, during snow days, our students wouldn’t lose their instructional time with us.” Burton said.
One of the examples McCammon used was a video from his 50 States album, where he creates songs about a U.S. state’s history and geography. The missouri video he used can be found here. McCammon’s twitter handle is @PocketLodge.
