The gym is filled with a sea of pink as the players of the Varsity Knights Boys Basketball team run onto the court. Not only an important inner conference game, the Knights are playing for more than themselves tonight. Tonight marks the sixth annual Pink Ribbon Game to raise awareness for breast cancer and all other forms of cancer.
“I’m playing for my aunt Holly because she has gone through breast cancer twice,” senior forward Josh Carpenter said. “It helps raise money for cancer research which is a big deal for me. This game wouldn’t be here without coach Hahn.”
The Knights go into the game with an overall record of 11-6 and an undefeated 4-0 record in conference play, giving them the top spot in the GAC South. The Knights will play the second place Fort Zumwalt West Jaguars. The Jaguars are 8-9 on the year with a 4-1 conference record. The Knights hope to win this game to create some separation in the standings and stay undefeated in conference.
“This, in my opinion, is the most important game of the season,” Senior forward James Gleeson said. “It could decide if we win or lose conference.”
Both the Knights and Jaguars are coming off a win. The Knights are riding a three-game win streak coming off a mid-season rough patch where they dropped three consecutive games. The Knights will have to calm a red hot Jaguars squad who has won seven of their last eight.
A big part in the team’s recent success is the play of senior James Gleeson who has been hitting his stride. Gleeson has put up 70 points in his last three games, including a career high 34 points in the Knights game against rival Francis Howell. Gleeson just can’t miss as he has shot an average 59 percent from the field in the last three games.
“What I like about this team is we are very team oriented,” Coach Darrell Davis said. “We know when someone is hot and to feed them the ball and he [Gleeson] has been hot since Christmas break.”
The Knights main focus will be defense to stop the all around game of the Jaguars. The Jaguars have put up 60 plus points up in five of their last six games.
The Knights will be playing at 7 p.m in FHN’s big gym on Feb. 14
