For the last six years, Varsity coach Dawn Hahn has been in charge of planning the annual Pink Ribbon basketball games. Boys and girls JV and varsity teams play on one night that supports the cause to help cure cancer and to support anyone who has been affected. Pink balloons are hung and all players are welcome to make a paper jersey with the name of someone they want to honor that has been or is currently being affected by this disease. This year, the Lady Knights are facing Fort Zumwalt West on February 14 at 5:30 in the gymnasium.
“I’m excited to recognize everyone and play in front of a big crowd,” Senior guard Jessica Moceri said, “It feels good to know we’re doing something to help others.”
Every year, Hahn has designed the T-shirts that are sold to students, teachers, and families and all proceeds are given to the American Cancer Association. In between the varsity games, a ceremony will be held to honor the ones affected and the paper jerseys will be distributed to the honorees who are present.
“Cancer can affect everyone in some way and it’s fun to do something for a good cause,” Senior forward Kaitlin Isbell said.
The team have been working hard during practices by running through plays and have been preparing for the ceremony.
“I’m looking forward to shutting down [Fort Zumwalt West’s] defense and taking good shots.” Junior point guard Austine Pauley said, “If we do that, we will win the game.”
Coach Hahn hopes the everyone grasps onto the fact that this night is more than merely a game of competition.
“The night is so much more than winning a basketball game, it’s about the people around us,” Hahn said, “That’s what I love and for them to turn around and give something back is what I want them to take away from this and see how good that feels.”
