On Feb. 20, art teacher Michael Leistner stuck a poster reading “Got something on your mind? Post it.” to the wall outside of his classroom, and set up a small table
with a few pads of post-it notes and a bucket of pencils. The idea was that if students had something on their mind, like a joke or a quick thought, they would write it down on a post-it and stick it near the poster.
“I stole the idea from the Contemporary Art Museum,” Leistner said. “There was a wall covered in post-its, and people would write things. Then other people would respond. It was so funny; I was laughing so hard my stomach hurt.”
Leistner plans to keep the sign up in the hallway for about a week, as not to make a mess with the post-its. He got the idea during one of his drawing classes on Thursday while his students were working. He’d thought about recreating the post-it wall ever since he saw it at the museum, but only decided to go for it last week.
“I think it’s a super cool idea, actually,” junior Rachel Rotter said. “It’s really creative, and as long as someone doesn’t write something inappropriate we could make it work. I’m going to be writing for it all the time.”
Leistner initially worried about students posting things that weren’t appropriate for school. When the idea came to him, the other art teachers questioned how students would handle it. He doesn’t hope for it to become a huge deal, as that would mean more checking the notes and more people flocking to the art hallway. Students have mostly posted quotes, Twitter handles, and quick thoughts so far.
“So far I haven’t seen anything that’s made me laugh, but it’s only been a day,” Leistner said. “What I saw at the museum was very funny, but your typical Contemporary Art Museum visitor is not a typical high schooler. The trip was about ten years ago, but I will never forget it.”
