On March 1 over 40 winter guards gathered to compete in the annual Art in Motion competition. The schools competed in eightt separate competitions based on seven different levels of skill. Timberland won the Regional A division. Parkway South won the second part of Regional A. Regional A is split in two competitions because of the volume of guards. Epsirit de Corps beat Ministry in Motion to win the Independent Regional A competition. Fort Zumwalt South won Scholastic C with their show ‘Dolls’. Washington’s JV team won Scholastic B and Washington’s Varsity took top spot in Scholastic A. The real competition ended there, the last three categories were entered by only one team each. Avidity A, a college team, FHN, and Avidity Independent, another more intense college team.
Winter guard is the indoor counterpart to color guard. Winter guard is a combination of dancing a tossing flags, rifles, and sabers in the air. Flags are easiest to catch, followed by rifles with the thin sabers being the hardest. North’s guard took 13 at the international competition held in Dayton last year.
