FHN Students Earn National Awards in San Diego
Twenty Francis Howell North High School Journalism staff members traveled to San Diego this past weekend to attend the JEA/NSPA National High School Journalism Convention. The staff had a great showing and brought home quite a few awards.
Two big honors highlighted the trip for the group. For starters, the Excalibur Yearbook staff was named a Pacemaker Winner, honoring it as one of the very top yearbooks in the country. It was the second time in school history the yearbook staff has earned the honor and the second consecutive year for it as well. In addition, Francis Howell North High School was one of six schools in the country to earn the First Amendment Press Freedom Award. It’s an honor given to those schools that allow First Amendment rights for high school journalists. It’s the fifth straight year the staff has been honored with the distinction.
In the Best of Show competition, all four staffs placed in the top 3 in their respective categories. FHNtodayTV placed third in the broadcast category, FHNtoday.com placed third in the large school website category, the North Star placed second in the newsmagazine category, and the Excalibur brought home the first place trophy for yearbooks 275-324 pages.
Individually, quite a few students were honored as well in write-off competitions. Earning Honorable Mentions were Ashleigh Jenkins in Newspaper News/Feature Photography, Lauren Camenzind in Yearbook Copy/Caption Academics and Fionna Cruz in Yearbook Layout: Inside Pages. Earning Excellent ratings were Kelsey Schaffrin in Graphic Design: Infographics, Liz Mayer in Yearbook Copy/Caption Clubs, Michael Ebert in Sports Writing, Daniel Bodden in News Editing/Headline Writing and Dan Stewart in Video Editing. Taking top spots in their write-off competitions with Superior ratings were Zack Eaton, Jake Chiarelli and Hannah Stillman in the Online News Package category, Matt Krieg in Photography Portfolio, Maddie Hiatt in Logo Design, Alex Weinstock in Broadcast Newswriting and Kayla Andrzejewski in Yearbook Copy/Caption Sports Writing.
The staff’s next national convention trip will be in the fall of 2014 to Washington D.C.

ANNOUNCEMENTS | ||||||||||||
Dear Francis Howell District Parents,
You can help to prepare your student for testing in several important ways. First of all, please make every effort to ensure that your student is in attendance on the days the tests are administered so that he/she takes the tests under the most optimum conditions. Secondly, please make sure that your student gets plenty of sleep and eats a good breakfast before coming to school so that he/she is both mentally and physically alert during testing. Finally, and most importantly, please encourage your child to put his/her best effort into the test so that the information gained is an accurate reflection of your child’s achievement.
The results gathered from these tests are critical measures of the district’s effectiveness in educating our students. These results are used at the district and building levels to evaluate program effectiveness, determine areas of instructional focus and prioritize instructional resources for school improvement planning. Test results will be available to parents before the end of this school year.
Our students have demonstrated consistent growth over the past several years. We are very proud of the efforts of our students, parents and teachers in sustaining this positive trend and we look forward to another year of increased improvement as we begin the 2014 testing window. Thank you for supporting your student during this year’s testing. 5/6 Downs
