On April 15, the Lady Knights soccer team lost 0-2 in a roughly played game against their rivals the Howell Vikings to advance to the record of 6-3.
“Overall it was one of our worst games this year,” Head Coach Mark Olwig said. “The team realizes that, and it is just a little bump in the road, we need to correct it and not have to many of those games.”
Both teams fought hard in the first half and ended the half tied at zero. Then ten minutes into the second half the ref made a controversial call in the box against the Knights giving the Vikings a Penalty kick. The Vikings buried the shot in the corner giving them a 0-1 lead. Soon after the Vikings got another goal off of a free kick giving them a 0-2 lead and the Knights were unable to retaliate.
“(The penalty kick) brought our whole team down and we could not get back up, it was rough,” senior starting defender Megan Oostendorp said.
This was the Knights first conference loss in the past two years as they went 10-0 last year. This year, they have beaten Zumwalt West twice, and both Zumwalt South and Howell Central once. The Knights next game is tonight at Zumwalt East at 7 p.m.
“We just have to get back to basics and play simple soccer, and stop trying to thing too much and just letting natural soccer ability take over,” Olwig said.
