On September 22 Varsity tennis won the GAC championship tournament at Holt.
At the game they took 1st in nine courts and 2nd in four courts.
“My goal is always to win and take as many courts as I can,”Head Coach Kate Kleiber said.
The team caps an undefeated season with this victory. This is also the teams fourth GAC title in a row. Six out of the eight varsity singles’ player took first place in their group. The groups are based on their rank on their team. Risa Takenaka took first in number one singles, and Yuri Takenaka took first in number two singles. The team took first in number three, four, six, and eight. They got second in numbers five and seven singles. It takes a lot of individual effort to accomplish these impressive feats.
“What you are in August is what you are in September, we have very little time to practice. They work on their game October through August,” Kleiber said.
After the GAC championship the team goes onto districts, sectionals, and then state. This years team features former state champion Risa Takenaka, who hopes to grab another title this year. But this year there is a very difficult road to state.
“Our draw for districts and sectionals have unbelievable talent, there are girls that were standing on the podium at state last year, that won’t make it through sectionals,” Kleiber said.
